KATHMANDU, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- A total of 43 people have been confirmed dead in disasters sparked by monsoon rains in Nepal in the last 24 hours, a government agency said on Sunday.

Among the dead, 38 were killed in landslides, three in lightning strikes and two in floods, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said in a statement.

"Five people, including four in a flood, are missing," the agency noted, adding that 12 people were injured in the disasters.

Ilam district in eastern Nepal reported 37 deaths in landslides, and Nepal Army soldiers backed by police officers have been carrying out rescue operations in 28 different locations, the army said.

Incessant rainfall from Friday has triggered landslides and floods across the country, obstructing highways and roads during the Dashain festival, the biggest and most important Hindu festival in Nepal.

A three-day ban on vehicular movement into and out of the Kathmandu Valley has been imposed since Saturday, and domestic flights at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu resumed on Sunday morning following a suspension on Saturday. ■
